Absam is an important place of pilgrimage in Tyrol. The Basilica of St. Mary of Absam (the church became a basilica in 2000) houses a portrait of the Holy Mother of God that is said to have appeared on January 17, 1797, in the window of a peasant's house: Rosina Puecher was embroidering in her room when she saw this portrait of the Virgin appear on a pane of glass. The basilica houses not only this icon of the Holy Mother of God, but also a famous painting of an angel before which people come to pray. A pilgrimage is held here every first Sunday of the month. Absam is a pleasant tourist town and the starting point for many hikes.
