As the western gateway to the Karwendel National Park, Scharnitz is well known to hikers for two reasons: for its "Eagle's Path" long-distance hiking trail, which offers some of the most photogenic scenery in the Tyrol, and for its Karwendelmarsch(Karwendel walk) in August, which brings together 2,500 runners, hikers and Nordic walkers to cover 35 or 52 km through the Scharnitz nature reserve to Lake Achensee. From the village, it's a fifteen-kilometre hike along the Isar to the entrance of the deep, spectacular Gleirschklamm gorge, accessible by a short footpath.
