With a population of less than 1,000, Ettal is home to two outstanding architectural and natural landmarks: Ettal Benedictine Abbey, founded in the 14th century, and Linderhof Castle, built in the 19th century. These two sights have nothing in common, except that they were both built by the Wittelsbach family. The abbey was founded by Ludwig the Bavarian, Duke of Bavaria and Holy Roman Emperor. The castle, on the other hand, was the brainchild of his distant descendant, King Ludwig II. It's possible to take a superb hike (several hours, but easy) from the castle to the abbey.
