This charming village on the banks of the Danube, opposite Krem, boasts one of the oldest Roman settlements in Austria (1st century AD). Well-preserved remains can still be seen. In the village, you'll find a museum dedicated to Roman times. In the Middle Ages, Mautern was an important trading center and a prosperous town, thanks to the revenues generated by the toll on its bridge over the Danube. It's a peaceful holiday resort, popular with hikers and cyclists, especially mountain bikers from Vienna, as well as kayakers on the Danube.
