High ramparts protect this little Slovakian gem, which is coiled around a central square lined with middle-class houses and dominated by a beautiful church that houses the most beautiful altarpiece by the illustrious Master Paul. Levoča is a quiet little town isolated by the choice of the railway route, which passes through Spišská Nová Ves, 9 km to the south. Nevertheless, Levoča remains the cultural and historical centre of the region, thanks to its unique monuments. It is also the site of the largest pilgrimage in the country, which is held on the nearby mountain of Mariánska hora. In 2009, the town of Levoča was included in the Unesco World Heritage List.
