Nestled in a hilly landscape, the small industrial town of Wadowice is famous throughout Poland for the birth of Karol Wojtyła, known worldwide as John Paul II, on May 18, 1920. The future pope spent his childhood and adolescence here until he passed his baccalaureate, when he left to continue his studies in Krakow. It's not much of a visit (admittedly, the commune of Wadowice is anything but pretty), but you might be interested to understand the origins of this pope who shook the national consciousness of Poles and will remain one of the great global personalities of twentieth-century history.
