This beautiful little town of 5,000 inhabitants, with its lovely rolling countryside, is a major Polish Catholic center. A Bernardine monastery, established here in the early 17th century, was the starting point for the town's development. Dozens of places of worship soon sprang up on all the surrounding hills, creating an incredible religious complex and the country's second-largest pilgrimage center after Częstochowa. Declared a "pilgrimage park" (a typically Polish appellation!), it has been listed as a Unesco protected site since 1999.
