Considered the "mother of Slovak cities", its main interest lies in its role as the Slovak religious capital. However, little remains of Nitra's past greatness, and it looks like a medium-sized city without any particular tourist interest. In 871, Nitra was the capital of the Kingdom of Great Moravia. At the beginning of the 12th century, the first monastery and the oldest school in Slovakia were built here. The city then fell into a period of relative oblivion. In the 19th century, Nitra developed economically, mainly in agricultural activities which are today one of the city's showcases.
