A small town of 18,000 inhabitants on the banks of the Lambro River, just outside Milan, Melegnano was the scene of the famous Battle of Marignano (Melegnano) in 1515. The Swiss mercenaries of Duke Maximilian Sforza were no match for the French army of the fledgling King Francis I, supported by the French marshal Gian Giacomo Trivulzio (Jacques de Trivulce). The historic center is of little interest, but the mighty Visconti castle is well worth a visit. The beautiful church of San Giovanni Battista, whose original structure dates back to the 4thcentury and which preserves a work by Bergognone (1506), completes the discovery of this locality.
