Founded by the settlers on 22 April 1536, Pueblo de la Mar later became Porlamar. Today, it is a commercial capital of 200 000 people, with its nightlife and hotels. The city centre is guided by the main avenues Santiago Mariño and 4 of Mayo (on 4 May 1810, the date on which Margarita stood the independence movement initiated in Caracas the previous month). See in old Porlamar the church San Nicolás de Bari near Bolívar square. For the rest, the whole thing does not hide a crazy charm. The centre is very animated and filled with street vendors, on a continuous music of Horns. a little in the north-east along Bolívar Avenue, the recent Costa Azul area where most luxury hotels are located. A very miniature Cancún!
