A refugee within the land where it was sheltered from pirates, La Asunción, which became administrative capital of the state of Nueva Esparta, remained a small colonial town with 18 000 inhabitants. It was founded by Pedro González in 1562, but the King of Spain gave him the title of city and arms only in 1600. Note that its cathedral is the second oldest in Latin America, built by Juan de Manzanillo in 1602. Since amendments have distorted its original appearance.
