The largest national park on the island (18 862 ha) houses a 25 km 2 lagoon, which ramifie into as many wild canals (18 km) as a protected fauna, such as the red ibis. Among the fish inhabiting the lagoon are pagres, sardines, groupers, sharks, and mule Lebranche, among others. Not to mention crustaceans and molluscs (crabs, oysters, guacuco, etc.). According to geologists, the isthmus owes its formation to the accumulation of shells and plant debris, on which mangroves were established. This site also offers the island its largest beach (27 km from La Guardia to Punta Tiger!). This has led the lagoon to be classified as a national park since 1974, to protect a fragile ecosystem, threatened by the island's tourist expansion, which houses pink flamingos, pêcheurs, cormorants, pelicans and several varieties of budgies such as the Amazon with yellow shoulder-shouldered shoulder (Amazon amazon).
