The village, located 10 km from Mérida, delimited by the Río River in the south and the thermal waters in the north, holds its name in a misunderstanding. It is indeed reported that Bolívar, entering the village, asked an Aboriginal person for the names of the places. He answered him "Sé no, estaba allí" (I don't know, I was there). The Libertador, then in the wonderful campaign, understood "Es Tabay" (it is Tabay). The name remained. Nevertheless, it is a pure legend! The reality is less funny, since history dates back to the first Indians, the Tabayones, sedentary and farmers, well before the Conquest. The remnants of this past can still be seen in the stone walls that track the paths. History returned to Tabay during the battles of the federal war when the village served as a rear base for federalists. It should be noted that it is very beautiful and that there is a quality craft, especially the cut wood. See the Centro Centro Rangel and the Centre on the square.
