Since the 4th century, Spello has been the religious place of reference in Umbria, thanks to Constantine who chose to make it a federal sanctuary. During the early Middle Ages, the town occupies a smaller area than it did originally. During the period of the Communes, the number of dwellings increased, exceeding the limits of the walls, which were rebuilt in the middle of the 14th century. As for the other Umbrian cities, the passage of the ecclesiastics in power proved to be anaesthetic. From the 16th century until the unity of Italy, apart from occasional interventions on religious monuments, little was built. Spello is part of the club of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy
