This town, situated in the middle of the hills and made up of Etruscan structures, was conquered by the Romans. In the 12th century it became an independent commune, but in 1352, after a long siege, it was conquered and destroyed by Perugia. In 1367 the Church ordered Cardinal Albornoz to rebuild the town, which was then included in the Papal States until the Italian unification in 1860. Today it has a population of 4,000 and, like other towns in Umbria, has been awarded the label of the Most Beautiful Towns in Italy, created in 2001 under the impetus of the Tourism Council of the ANCI (National Association of Italian Municipalities).
