A city that is often forgotten in travel guides. Yet this resort, facing the Ligurian sea, has assets to spare such as its famous passeggiata with its Art Nouveau style facades (which the Italians call Liberty) and its 10 km of private and public beaches (mainly present in the natural park of San Rossore). Viareggio experiences a peak of activity a few days before Easter, during its famous carnival. Less ancient than its neighbours, the town was born in the 16th century, when it became the only access to the sea for Lucca. The oldest building, Torre Matilde, was built in this period.
