Ranked among the 100 most beautiful villages in Italy, this small medieval town, spread out in terraces above the Serchio valley, played a major role in the Medici era as a river crossroads for the transport of wood. It tried several times to escape the yoke of its rival Lucca by placing itself under the protection of Florence or Pisa. Today Barga is a cultural melting pot. Its artists, its opera festival in July and Barga-Jazz in August attract many music lovers, including sometimes Paolo Nutini (his grandfather was born here). Find the calendar of festivities at the tourist office, via di Mezzo.
