Perched at 700 metres above sea level on the Apennine side of the Garfagnana, this medieval village was under the control of the Duchy of Lucca until 1429, when it was placed under the protection of Ferrara. In 1452, during the difficulties that Garfagnana experienced (especially during the misdeeds of the terrible bandit known as the "Moro"), Ludovico Ariosto, known as L'Ariosto, was appointed governor of the area. Nowadays, the village is peaceful and in summer it hosts many historical and gastronomic festivals. It is also the starting point of the famous Moro trails: a network of seven marked paths with breathtaking views of the Apuan Alps, to plunge into the heart of a beautiful, unspoilt nature.
