In the heart of Tuscany, here's a marvel of the Sienese region, though less popular with tourists. Known as the city of crystal, Colle di Val d'Elsa is divided into two parts, linked by an elevator: Colle Alta, surrounded by 16th-century ramparts, and Colle Bassa, on the plain of the Elsa river. This is a city marked by illustrious painters and architects such as Giorgio Vasari, Giuliano da Sangallo and Arnolfo di Cambio, the architect of Florence's Duomo, born here around 1232. Medieval in appearance, with cobbled streets and the remains of 12th and 13th century fortifications, Colle di Val d'Elsa offers more than one excuse for a stroll.
