The city was probably the birthplace (1313) and certainly the deathplace (1375) of the writer Boccaccio, author of the Decameron, who gave the Tuscan language its letters of nobility and contributed, along with his "colleagues" Dante and Petrarch, to the development of the Italian language. The old town of Certaldo (Alto), raised on a promontory, still preserves the traces of its medieval past and every July its alleys welcome street performers and musicians during the Mercantia festival. At regular intervals, a funicular connects the lower town, from piazza Boccaccio, to the upper town (old town). Otherwise, the (steep) ascent on foot takes about ten minutes
