Greve in Chianti, the famous capital of Chianti Classico, emerges as a beautiful agricultural centre on the river of the same name. A small village in the heart of Tuscany, it resembles a permanent wine fair - even though the annual wine fair officially takes place in early September! Shops are plentiful in this tourist town; you can hear English, German... even in winter. On Saturdays, the village changes its face when the market invades the main square, the triangular and charming Piazza Matteotti, where the Santa Croce church stands. Easily accessible by bus from Florence's Sita train station (45-minute journey, €9).
