Perched on three hills, Siena is an incomparable ochre-red jewel in the heart of the Tuscan countryside. It's not without reason that visitors often say they prefer Siena to Florence. Siena is a sumptuous city of art and culture, yet it has managed to retain its traditional identity. The medieval city takes visitors back in time to the 13th century, when it was Florence's great rival. Siena boasts one of Italy's most brilliant universities, an old-fashioned charm and a rich and complex past, while the natives have elevated their identity to the status of culture. The divisions into seventeen contrade (cities within the city) still have a fundamental significance for the Sienese. This pride is particularly evident every July 2 and August 16, during the famous Palio horse race in the iconic Piazza del Campo.
