This picturesque little town, with its old-fashioned charm and medieval stone houses, offers itself to visitors in search of authenticity. It is located south of Gaiole in Chianti, at the foot of a hill dominated by the ruins of the castle of Monteluco. Yet this serenity hides a much darker past. Lecchi in Chianti, formerly called "Malborghetto", was used as a place of exile for criminals and political enemies, especially during the government of Lorenzo de' Medici, known as the Magnificent (1449-1492). Today peaceful and so pleasant, Lecchi deserves a stop, especially for its small church and its gourmet grocery store.
