San Casciano, the main town in the Val di Pesa, 17 km from Florence, is one of the first towns to welcome you to the northern Chianti. Its charming town centre, perched on a hill, is covered with walls, small fortresses and churches, such as that of the Misericordia, where Simone Martini's crucifix is kept, as well as works by Ugolino da Siena and Giovanni Balduccio. But it is also the town where Machiavelli, in exile, wrote The Prince, dedicated to the new master of Florence, Lorenzo de' Medici. Finally, for the amateurs, a market is held every Monday in the gardens of the Piazza della Repubblica.
