Surrounded to the north by the Bellunian Dolomites and to the south by the greener, gentler foothills of the Pre-Alps, Belo donum (the Celts gave it its nickname, the shining hill) is a quiet, liveable and venerated town in a rolling valley, crossed by the Piave river Built on a rocky spur at the confluence of the Ardi and Piave rivers, it is one of the least polluted and quietest towns on the peninsula: picturesque views and streets against a backdrop of snowy peaks, long porticoes as in many towns in the area, Gothic houses that stand alongside buildings with northern lines, ancient fountains and Renaissance palazzetti of Venetian inspiration. Belluno is the birthplace of the famous author of the works The K and The Desert of the Tartars, Dino Buzzati, who rests in the chapel of his villa not far from the historic centre. An old mountain town, it is close to the winter sports resorts of Nevegal. The pungent air that one breathes there reminds us of its resolutely alpine vocation. The tourist office is located in Plaza Duomo.
