Ile des Vignole is located in the centre of the lagoon. It is bordered to the north by the Canale della Bissa, to the south and west by the canal and the island of Sant'Erasmo. Located about 1 km east of Venice, towards Sant'Elena, it is easily accessible by vaporetto. This island is a long sandy spine located between the ports of Sant'Erasmo and Lido. It is characterized by a luxuriant vegetation, which makes it a small pearl in the lagoon (in Venice, trees can be counted on the fingers of one hand). In ancient times, this island was called Biniola or delle sette vigne (of the seven vines). At that time it was one of the favourite holiday resorts of the inhabitants of Altino and later of Venice. According to the poet Martial, the magnificence of its residences was superior to those of Pozzuoli. In the 7th century, a small church was built there, of which only a chapel dedicated to San Erosia remains today. At its sides there is a small bell tower. From the strong military presence in the past, the island has kept a large building, used at the time as a powder magazine and situated in front of Sant'Erasmo, and a bridge linking the island to Forte San Andrea, built in the 14th century to defend Venice from Turkish attacks. In summer, the Isola dei Vignole is the ideal place for a walk followed by a good meal in one of its few trattorie located near the pier.
