Perched at an altitude of 291 m, this small village, with its houses stacked like a Lego set, is awe-inspiring. But how does it keep from collapsing? A former fortified town literally clinging to the cliff, Apricale resembles a life-size jigsaw puzzle. And in the midst of this apparent bric-a-brac, the ruins of the12th-century Château de la Lucertola (Lizard Castle) still stand. It was once the property of the Counts of Ventimiglia. The Romanesque church of Sant'Antonio Abate, patron saint of the town, still bears its15th-century frescoes. Renowned for its ceramics, the village is teeming with artists' studios.
