To escape the war against the Ashanti, the Ewé (or Avante), who came from a small dusty village in the north, headed for the Gewi Mountains. Unfortunately for them, giants (or Baya in Ewe) were already living there. So, rather than go to war again, the Ewé proposed peace to the giants. To celebrate the good news, the Ewé decided to make the day of the peace agreement a feast day. At each celebration, Ewé and Géants exchanged palm wine, which each tasted beforehand to ensure its quality. One evening, the Ewé wise men gathered under the village palaver tree, and talked all night. Early in the morning, the council explained that it was time to get rid of the giants. Their plan was to poison the palm wine intended for the Baya. A sickly old man was chosen to taste the wine and trick the enemy. On the day of the feast, the old Ewe slipped away just after tasting the poisoned wine. The giants drank the wine, convinced of their ally's honesty. Then they quickly fell into a never-ending sleep... making the Ewé the sole masters of the land.Today, the village of Amedzofe, 36 km north of Ho, is the highest village in Ghana (750 m). It enjoys a breathtaking view over the valley and allows nature lovers to explore the surrounding area. There's plenty to do here: trekking in the mountains, swimming in the waterfalls or visiting the monkey sanctuary.
