The small town of Gort (with a population of less than 3,000, many of whom are of Brazilian origin) is not particularly interesting for tourists, but there are a number of interesting sites in the surrounding area, which we'd like to mention here. Not to be missed are Coole Park and its beautiful walking trails, as well as Thoor Ballylee, just a few kilometers from the town, which was a source of inspiration for the poet William Butler Yeats. Finally, 5 kilometers south-west of Gort, Kilmacduagh Monastery is a peaceful, bucolic monastic site well worth a stroll.
