A fairly picturesque town of 5,000 people with colourful streets, Cahir is situated close to the Galtee Mountains. Of Norman origin and built in 1142 by Conor O'Brien, Cahir Castle (pronounced "Cair"), one of the largest and best preserved in Ireland, stands proudly and majestically above the town. It is so photogenic that Mel Gibson used it as the setting for his 1995 film Braveheart . Cahir also has a ruined Anglican church, which is not without charm. You'll find everything you need for a pleasant stopover in the town centre, especially on Castle Street. Allow a few hours for this.
