Twenty kilometers east of Tipperary, Cashel( Gaelic:Caiseal ) is completely dominated by the imposing Rock of Cashel, a group of medieval fortifications built on top of a rock, with a special atmosphere. In 1647, Cashel was caught up in the turmoil of the Wars of Religion, which saw the Catholic confederation of Kilkenny and the English parliamentary army attack the town. Bloody battles ensued, despite the fact that the inhabitants fled to the rock. Today, the town of Cashel is peaceful and famous for its delicious cheese (Cashel blue, a blue cheese).
