It is very pleasant to arrive in this city, between water and hills. As the Dubliners' song shows, Skibbereen ("Skib" for short) once suffered greatly from the Great Famine. Thank God those tragic times are over and the town - the main one in West Cork County - is now quite prosperous, often serving as a starting point for exploring the area.
Visit the West Cork Arts Centre which exhibits a wide range of quality craftwork and don't miss the Heritage Centre, a museum about the Great Famine of 1840 during which more than a million Irish people lost their lives.
