It is very pleasant to arrive in this city, between water and hills. As the Dubliners' song attests, Skibbereen ("Skib" to its friends) once suffered greatly from the Great Famine. Thank goodness those tragic days are over and the town - the main one in West Cork - is now quite prosperous. It is frequently used as a starting point for exploring the region. You can visit the West Cork Arts Centre, which exhibits a wide range of quality art, and the Heritage Centre, a museum about the Great Famine of 1840, during which more than a million Irish people lost their lives, is not to be missed.
