Founded by the Dutch in 1925, Makale is the administrative capital of Toraja country. Located just 17 km south of Rantepao, the economic capital, Makale was once an important trading center, becoming one of the largest towns in Tana Toraja. The town plays a central and important role in trade, mainly focused on livestock, rice and pigs. Makale is renowned for its cyclical six-day market, which has become the town's main attraction. The local population, mainly made up of traders, contributes to making Makale a dynamic economic center in the Tana Toraja region.
