A small port on the Gulf of Bone, Palopo was once the capital of a kingdom. At that time, the bulk of its trade was based on the sale of Toraja slaves, who were sent to Java and Siam (Thailand). Today, Palopo is merely a gateway to Toraja country. Despite its dusty little museum in the king's palace, the monumental kriss commemorating the struggle for independence, and a superb muddy coastline, the little town is not a much-visited site. Only a few divers come from time to time to explore the world-famous offshore coral reefs, especially in Palopo.
