5 km from Batutumonga, on the road to Pangalla, just before the village of Loko'Mata, stands a monumental boulder over 20 metres in diameter, with some sixty mausoleums carved directly into the rock. Impressive, especially when you see the fragile but ingenious bamboo structures used to excavate and access the upper chambers. The richly decorated tombs display photos of the deceased, flowers (even plastic ones), bottles and many other objects. The Toraja believe that these offerings help souls to pass on to the afterlife. Some mausoleums bear witness to the age of the place.
