Around 5 hours north of Makassar, Polewali is a stopover between Pare Pare and Mamasa. This small Bugi port with its traditional houses on stilts is not on the road to Toraja country and is therefore not very touristy. The area is famous for its silk sarongs (sarung mandar) and rattan rod handicrafts. You can also reach the beautiful beaches of nearby islands in 15 minutes by fishing boat. The region is best known for its agricultural production, including soybeans, cassava, corn, sweet potatoes, beans, rice and tropical fruits such as durian, mangosteen, mango and rambutan.
