Route 41 leads to Sønderborg, built on the island of Als, connected to Jutland by two bridges. This city of 30 000 inhabitants has developed around a medieval fortress. The island of Als stretches gently between its beaches and woods. The port of Sønderborg is home to many pleasure boats that enjoy the tranquility of the Baltic waters here. It looks like Holland with its rows of gabled houses, but with very Danish colors. Few buildings are old, because the city was largely rebuilt after the ten weeks of siege and the Prussian bombardments suffered in 1864.
