Its name Åbenrå literally means "open beach". A small fishing village founded in the 13th century, of which there are still beautiful houses from the 17th century. Its history is complex: once Danish, once German. Indeed, it was integrated into the Duchy of Schleswig (today it is the capital of the German minority of the province) then ceded to Prussia in 1864 before becoming Danish again after the plebiscite, linked to the Treaty of Versailles of 1919, which was to determine the border between the two countries! Surrounded by forests, the city, which today has 22,000 inhabitants, spreads out its wide boulevards leading to a very active port.
