Flensburg is the northernmost city in Germany on the Danish border. It will be even more exotic than elsewhere in Northern Germany, especially since it is home to a large Danish minority; the city is also bilingual. In German ears, the name of the city is not nice, since it is the centre of the German traffic police, where fines are sent from: losing points on your licence is said in slang to be "losing a point in Flensburg". It is also known as "Rumstadt" because of its former and very prosperous rum trade with the Caribbean in the 18th century But Flensburg has a beautiful architecture; its old town from the 18th to the 19th centuries, which extends along the water, is decorated with merchant houses and Gothic churches. Its port is pleasant and offers picturesque views of the old town. The city focuses on the living artery, Holm/Grosse Strasse, and the beautiful squares that intersect it, the Südermarkt and the Nordermarkt. The Baltic coast and hinterland east of Flensburg are quite wild, pleasant to explore and perfect for cycling tours.
