Located 15 km east of Tulcea, this village of 2,300 inhabitants is the first you'll come across along the Sfântu Gheorghe branch. Nufăr means "water lily" in Romanian. A recent name: until the 1960s, the village was known as Prislava, and has been since the 10th century, when it was an important urban center of the Byzantine Empire. It was surrounded by a fortress, the remains of which are still visible. Several archaeological discoveries have been made here. Nufăru is also a popular bathing spot on fine days, when the Danube drops in level, revealing a few beaches.
