His name is, like Mahmudia's, of Turkish origin. Murighiol, 3,000 inhabitants, is on the shores of the lake of the same name, connected by short canals to the arm of the river. 2.5 km east of the village are the ruins of the ancient city of Halmyris, a powerful Roman and later Roman-Byzantine fortress. There are the remains of the fortress and a basilica, containing the crypt of the first Christian martyrs of Dobrogea, Epictetus and Astion (Tuesday to Sunday from 8am to 4pm). The nearby lake Sărăturii, to the south, is a famous place for bird-watching. From there you can reach the pretty village of Dunavăţu de Jos, the last one accessible by road.
