Between Babadag and Constanța, the commune of Istria is home to Romania's largest archaeological site: the Histria fortress, to the east of the village, between lakes Nuntași, Zmeica and Sinoe. It was founded in 657 BC by Greek colonists. At the time, this port city was located on the shores of the Black Sea. Its prosperity lasted for some 1,200 years, before the bay silted up and the Gothic invasions of the 3rd century AD largely destroyed it. Rebuilt in the following century on a much smaller scale, it never regained its prestige and was abandoned in favor of other ports.
