This village of 2,000 inhabitants is the main ferry stop. Its 19th-century church, with its 45 m steeple, is one of the highest in the country. Chilia Veche is believed to be the ancient Greek city of Achillea, fortified by Alexander the Great. The importance of its strategic and economic role declined over time, as the land advanced away from the Black Sea. In the Middle Ages, it was just 5 km from the sea; today, it's 40 km away!
