Situated between Sibiu, Sighișoara and Alba Iulia, this city of 47,000 inhabitants is a crossroads in the heart of Transylvania. The city is fairly industrial, but its beautiful historic center is lively and bustling. The city was fortified in several stages by the Saxons, as early as the 13th century. They developed trade here. A few fragments of the town wall and towers remain, such as the slightly leaning Trompettes tower. If you're not motorized, Mediaș can be a good starting point for exploring the villages and fortified churches.
