It's one of the jewels of Saxon culture in Romania: the village of Viscri (German: Weißkirch), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to a remarkably well-preserved all-white church-citadel. This tiny village lost in the hills of the Transylvanian plateau boasts magnificent traditional Saxon houses and bears witness to a rural culture that is still very much alive. Today, only a handful of Saxon families remain, while the Roma who helped restore the old houses make up the majority of the population. Thanks to numerous projects, the village has regained its vitality.
