Nestled in the hills, surrounded by orchards, this charming Saxon village of colorful Baroque houses is one of the best preserved in Romania. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is home to the country's most beautiful fortified church. Founded in the 13th century, Biertan has become a major agricultural, viticultural, craft and religious center. Today, it boasts a large Roma community, while most Saxons left after the fall of communism. Biertan is the starting point for many wonderful hikes, mountain bike rides and horseback rides (information at www.colinele-transilvaniei.ro). Biertan can be reached by bus from Mediaș.
