Lying on the banks of the Târnava Mare river, Sighișoara (24,000 inhabitants) is one of Transylvania's jewels. Its medieval city(cetatea), which dominates the town and valley, is wonderfully well preserved, earning it a place on Unesco's World Heritage list. It is undoubtedly one of the finest surviving fortified towns in Europe. Colorful houses display their function with wrought-iron signs. The streets are cobbled and quiet, and the churches and schools are always busy. In other words, the city is alive, which spares visitors the impression of wandering through a museum.
