In this large, pretty town of over 145,000 inhabitants, in the center of Transylvania, the signs are bilingual. Around 50% of the population is Magyar. Called Marosvásárhely in Hungarian, Târgu Mureș, which experienced serious inter-ethnic tensions in 1990, is little visited by foreign tourists, and that's a shame. Its well-preserved citadel, the atmosphere provided by the students and the local cultural particularism give the town a lot of charm. The central district around the long Piața Trandafirilor is particularly pleasant. In summer, many restaurants and cafés spread out their vast terraces.
