Situated at the foot of Mount Tâmpa, at an altitude of around 650 m, Brașov and its medieval center delight all visitors. Colonized in the Middle Ages by the Saxons, who called it Kronstadt, the town was then situated at a crossroads of trade routes and, as a result, prospered rapidly. Following the construction of fortifications and the embellishment of the city by wealthy trade guilds, it became the economic and demographic center of the region. Its rich houses and superb churches date back to this period. Brașov, now home to almost 300,000 inhabitants, is today a major economic and tourist center. Its medieval town center, located in the southeast of the urban area, is of great beauty. From a vast, colorful square (Piața Sfatului), which is highly photogenic, a lively pedestrian axis and small, quiet, almost village-like streets lead off, lined with large houses with flower-filled inner courtyards.
